Mac USB Ports Stopped Working? It’s Likely Easy to Fix

Does the device work on another computer? It may have failed. You may try a powered hub or a USB 'Y' connection cable.

Every USB device I’ve plugged into an iOS 13 iPad so far

I can plug it into the keyboard and it works fine, does anyone know what is going on? To prevent damaging your computer, the USB device drawing too much power has been disabled. Other devices may have also been disabled. When you disconnect the device drawing too much power, your other USB devices will be enabled again. Hi, is that plugging it directly into a USB port on the iMac? Do you have any other Bus powered things connected to the Mac? Hi, all.

Two days ago I was using my computer, a Macbook Pro, and suddenly got the error message reading "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory. To avoid problems with your computer, quit any applications you are not using. Closing windows and removing files from your startup disk will also help. However, the message kept popping up and I deleted a few files and eventually it went away and hasn't reappeared.

However, last night and then again this morning I have been getting the error message that my USB drive is pulling too much power and has been disable. All that was plugged in was my iPhone 5 on the charger and my computer is also on its charger, so I don't know why this would be an issue, either. I have always charged my phone this way and never had a problem until today.

  • I haven't been able to charge my phone since. What's going on with my computer? Starting about two days ago, I've been getting error messages about every 30 seconds saying that a usb device is drawing too much power, and my usb device has been disabled.

I haven't had anything plugged into the usb ports for about 3 weeks, well before I started getting this error message. At first the error messages came up one at a time, but now about 5 of them pop up every 30 seconds.. There seems to be no visible damage to either of the usb ports, and I've updated software and restarted it too.

Can anyone help me figure out what's going on? My GoPro camera battery doesn't seem to charge right or something because when I charged it tonight, it seemed to be over heating. This is a brand new camera and one of the first time I tried charging the battery. When I checked my computer it came up with the error: "Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your usb devices have been disabled" I tried a different cable, that didn't work. Reset the SMC. That didn't work. Reset the PRAM. Tried to plug in my iPod to see if that works, it works fine.

Anyone else have any ideas of what to do?? Which GoPro Hero Camera? Try charging the camera batteries before you connect to the MacBook. I am interested to see if that works for you. I just bought a GoPro Hero 3 Black and it works fine. First time I connected to a USB port it worked jsut fine. Later, when I tried to connect it again, I got a message that the USB port is drawing too much power. I tried a diferent port and it gave same mesage.

Disconnected, tried again and it worked fine. I'm wondering if it's a matter of the camera battery drawing too much power when charging?

I haven't tried it yet again with a full charge. Any ideas? USB consuming too much power -notice. I don't have anything connected to my Macbook Pro bought year , not even mouse, just power wire. I don't see any difference after the notice that something has been shut down. It is just popping up all the time and makes working with the computer really annoying.

It might be related situations the when computer is moved, or something. Thank you in advance already! I had the same problem which arose just after I lost an external hard disk Lacie 1 Tb started to make loud clicking sounds. I'm not sure whether I lost the hard disk because the break down of the USB-ports or whether I lost the USB-ports because of the break down of the hard disk? Nothing of it helped. Instead I went to the authorised Apple service partner. And now it gets scary for real. Apparently the USB-ports are an integrated part of the logic board not just a card and I need to get a new logic board to fix the USB-ports.

Price A new MacBook Pro will set me back I'm in some kind of chock. The MacBook is not yet 18 months old and works fine - except for the USB ports that I do need for connecting my camera, external hard drives and my iPhone This is the abbreviated error that I receive when I plug in my daughter's brand new iphone 5 to my 1-year old Mac. Can anyone help? Thank you!! Good Afternoon, I actually ended up taking the phone into the Sprint store last night, as that is our Carrier, and we had ordered it direct thru them.

I did not take it in for this reason as I thought this was more an Apple situation. I took it in because the charger would not charge the phone even plugged into the wall. You had to hold it at a weird angle to get it to charge. The gentleman took a look at it and said the cord was bad. So then I took out the usb and examined it, and i saw what looked like a speck of dust inside it, so i blew into it until i couldnt see the speck anymore and then reinserted it and then it worked.

Just got the same problem today with my iPad.

Since upgrading to Lion, I get this error every time I start up: I've read the answers suggested here , but they seem to indicate that it's the presence of a second device that's causing the problem. Is there any way to fix this? EmmyS EmmyS 7 7 gold badges 19 19 silver badges 33 33 bronze badges.

Do you still get the message when the external keyboard is not attached to a USB port on the laptop? Good question; I'll have to unplug it and restart to see - the error only occurs at startup. OK, I just restarted without the external keyboard, and I still get the error message. But again, this never happened before the upgrade to Lion, and all of my USB ports used to work, so I don't know why a software update would start messing with hardware. It could be a corrupt USB kernel extension.

I'd try booting to Safe Mode : Turn off your Mac. Turn it back on and before you see the Apple logo on your screen, press and hold the Shift key until the Apple logo appears. A progress bar should appear below the Apple logo - during this time your Mac is performing a directory check and loads only necessary Apple kernel extensions among other small things. Try the Safe Mode boot and see how it goes. Good Luck! Dan Barrett Dan Barrett 1, 7 7 silver badges 8 8 bronze badges.

It worked. Thanks so much. Half of my office was upgraded at the same time I was, and everyone was getting that error. I'm passing this along. I had the same problem with my iMac since last night and Safe Mode boot as suggested by Dan Barrett worked. This didn't work for me, but disconnecting a faulty cable did, as explained in another answer.

If lots of people are getting this error it poses the question how were they upgraded? Perhaps your IT department has a bad install or the incorrect install they are putting on all the machines? This is probably the problem if you cannot fully insert a usb plug into any of the ports. I had that response on another forum, but it's not the case.
