Apple's official Flashback removal tool

Flashback is the name of a Mac trojan discovered in It masqueraded as an update to Adobe Flash and persuaded users to download it in order to install the update.

When a Mac user visited an infected website, the malicious code displayed a Java applet that downloaded itself to the Mac. By April , it was estimated that around , Macs had been infected. Shortly afterwards, Apple issued several patches to Java to patch the vulnerability and repair the damage caused by Flashback.

It also added a feature that disabled Java if it had not been used for the previous 30 days. The company also issued a standalone Flashback removal tool. Apple stopped pre-installing Java with macOS and it stopped producing its own version of Java, meaning that any Mac users who wanted to install it had to download the latest version and keep it updated independently.

It also highlighted deficiencies on the part of Apple when it comes to security. As we covered last week, you can check for evidence of infection pretty easily. As John Martellaro from Mac Observer pointed out last week, this is a wake up call for Apple in terms of building real security into its products more than it has to date. For businesses, this should be a simple challenge. Centralized antivirus software should have alerted IT staff to the presence of the malware.

Whether through automated actions or IT-initiated processes, the virus should have been removed immediately. Sometimes that means not installing antivirus software at all.
